Two Philosophies, Two Nations

The humanoid robot war is being fought between two superpowers — and it's far from a foregone American victory. On one side, Tesla Optimus: Elon Musk's AI-first machine. On the other, Unitree G1: the viral star from Hangzhou, agile, affordable, available from $16,000.

According to Rest of World, China currently controls approximately 90% of the global humanoid robot market. The race resembles what happened in electric vehicles: rapid Chinese domination, rock-bottom prices, unmatched industrial capacity.

Mobility and Physical Performance

The G1 impresses with agility that exceeds its specifications. With 23 to 43 degrees of freedom, it stands out for its acrobatics and fall recovery. It set a Guinness record by completing 106 km at −47°C in Xinjiang.

Optimus takes the opposite approach: human-sized (173 cm), designed to operate in factories. Its 2.3 kWh battery provides a full day of autonomy, and its Gen 3 hands (22 DoF, 50 actuators) can manipulate raw eggs without breaking them. With 20 kg of payload, it is designed to lift and assemble on a production line. Read our full Tesla Optimus review.

Artificial Intelligence

Tesla brings to Optimus a unique data flywheel effect: every robot deployed in a factory generates training data redistributed via OTA to the entire fleet. Neither Unitree nor Figure AI can replicate this structural advantage.

Unitree G1 relies on reinforcement learning and imitation learning. In March 2026, Unitree open-sourced UnifoLM-VLA-0, a Vision-Language-Action model enabling autonomous household tasks. Solid for specific tasks, but without an AI ecosystem comparable to Tesla. Read our full Unitree G1 review.

Availability and Pricing

The summary is stark: Unitree sells robots. Tesla promises them.

Between 13,000 and 18,000 humanoid robots were sold worldwide in 2025. Unitree sold 5,500 units, making it the world's top vendor. Tesla did not reach its production target of 5,000 units.

The Unitree Security Scandal

In September 2025, the UniPwn exploit (CVE-2025-35027) documented by IEEE Spectrum was disclosed: via Bluetooth, an attacker can gain complete root access. Additionally, the G1 sends data to servers in China every 5 minutes without explicit consent. For any organization handling sensitive data: extreme caution is required.

FAQ

What is the best humanoid robot available for purchase in 2026?

In terms of immediate availability and value for money, the Unitree G1 at $16,000 is the most realistic choice. It ships in 4 to 8 weeks. Tesla Optimus, despite superior potential, is not yet for sale.

Is the Unitree G1 a data security risk?

The UniPwn vulnerability (Sept. 2025) allows wireless root access. The robot sends data to Chinese servers every 5 minutes. For sensitive use: isolated network is mandatory. For non-sensitive academic use: manageable risk.

Does China really dominate the humanoid robot market?

Yes. In 2025, Unitree and AgiBot each sold more units than Tesla's total production target. China controls ~90% of the current global market.
